The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is a committee established to protect the rights and welfare of research subjects.  The IRB reviews research involving human subjects to ensure that the research meets ethical guidelines and regulatory and institutional requirements.

The Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) require IRB approval of human subjects research regulated by these agencies.
